Diving into Paradise: A Scuba Adventure at Caño Island, Costa Rica

Martin Goetzinger

As a passionate scuba diver always on the lookout for new underwater wonders, I recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Caño Island, off the coast of Costa Rica. This hidden gem in the Pacific Ocean promised crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and the thrill of exploring one of Costa Rica's most pristine diving destinations.

The adventure began early in the morning as I boarded a boat in Drake Bay for the 45-minute ride to Caño Island. The journey itself was a spectacle, with the rugged coastline of the Osa Peninsula slowly fading into the distance as we cut through the deep blue waters. Our experienced captain regaled us with tales of the island's history and the marine life we might encounter. As if on cue, a whale appeared, surfacing about 30 feet from our boat and setting the tone for the magical day ahead.

Costa Rica regulations are that you must wear a PFD.

As we approached Caño Island, its lush green silhouette emerged from the horizon. The anticipation built as we donned our gear and prepared for our first dive. Our dive master briefed us on the site, emphasizing the importance of respecting this protected marine area.

Slipping into the warm, crystal-clear waters, I was immediately struck by the visibility – easily 60 feet or more. The underwater landscape unfolded before me like a living tapestry. Coral formations in shades of purple, orange, and green sprawled across the seafloor, teeming with life. Schools of colorful tropical fish darted in and out of the coral, while larger predators like snappers and jacks patrolled the edges of the reef.

As we glided through the water, our dive master signaled excitedly, pointing to a dark shape in the distance. My heart raced as I recognized the sleek form of a blacktip reef shark. These graceful creatures, about 5 feet long, moved with effortless elegance through the water. We were lucky enough to see several during our dive, a testament to the health of this marine ecosystem.

The beach is basically untouched & natural with lots of lizards and birds everywhere

Between dives, we had the opportunity to visit the island itself. A short hike to the summit revealed breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding ocean. The trail wound through dense tropical forest, alive with the calls of exotic birds and the rustling of unseen creatures. Reaching the top, I was struck by the raw beauty of this remote paradise – pristine beaches fringing an emerald jewel set in a sapphire sea.

Met a new friend on my hike to the top of the island.

Our second dive was even more spectacular than the first. Descending to a site known as "El Bajo del Diablo" (The Devil's Rock), we encountered a dramatic underwater landscape of volcanic rock formations and steep drop-offs. Here, the marine life was even more abundant. Huge schools of grunts and snappers moved in unison, parting like a living curtain as we swam through. A curious sea turtle glided by, regarding us with ancient eyes before disappearing into the blue.

Caño Island is more than just a dive site; it's a window into a thriving marine ecosystem, carefully protected and brimming with life. The memories of gliding alongside blacktip sharks, marveling at colorful coral gardens, and being surrounded by swirling schools of fish will stay with me forever.

The only building I saw on Caño Island has this colorful mural that I loved.

For any scuba enthusiast or nature lover, Caño Island is a must-visit destination. It offers a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and the opportunity to witness marine conservation in action. As I watched the island recede into the distance, I was already planning my return, eager to explore more of the underwater wonders that make this corner of Costa Rica so special.
