Escape to Stamford: A Late Summer Getaway from NYC

Martin Goetzinger

Did you know that Stamford, Connecticut, is just 33 miles northeast of New York City and boasts over 19 miles of coastline?

This charming city, often overlooked by tourists, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Join me on a journey from the bustling streets of Manhattan to the serene waterfront of Stamford.

All Aboard: NYC to Stamford

My adventure began at the gleaming Moynihan Train Hall in New York City. Using the Amtrak app, I effortlessly booked my ticket to Stamford - a process so smooth, it felt like cheating the system. The app is a game-changer, allowing you to purchase tickets, modify travel plans, and even board with contactless eTicket scanning.

Insider Tip: Download the Amtrak app before your trip. It's not just for booking; it provides real-time train status updates and platform information, making your journey stress-free.

The train ride itself is a breeze, taking just 47 minutes on average. As I settled into my seat, the urban landscape of New York gradually gave way to the lush greenery of Connecticut. Before I knew it, we were pulling into Stamford Station.

Cost: Tickets start from as low as $6, but can go up to $408 depending on the type of service and how far in advance you book. I recommend booking early for the best deals.

Waterfront Dining

Stamford's waterfront dining scene is a delightful surprise. I made my way to The Crab Shell Restaurant, a local institution that's been serving up seafood and stunning views for over 30 years.

Boats glided by, their white sails stark against the blue sky. I ordered the catch of the day - a perfectly grilled striped bass - and watched as the sun began its descent, painting the water in hues of orange and pink.

Pro Tip: For the best views, request a table on the western side of the patio. You'll be treated to a spectacular sunset over Stamford Harbor.

Off the Beaten Path: Stamford Museum & Nature Center

For a change of pace, I visited the Stamford Museum & Nature Center. This 118-acre property is home to a working farm, an art museum, and miles of hiking trails. I spent hours exploring the woodland paths, encountering friendly farm animals, and even trying my hand at maple syruping (yes, even in late summer!).

Insider Tip: Don't miss the Heckscher Farm. It's a fully functioning New England farm where you can see heritage breed animals up close.

Open daily: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Admission: Adults $14, Children (4-17) $7

From the ease of the journey to the beauty of the waterfront and the hidden gems waiting to be discovered, this city had won me over.

Stay curious, fellow travelers. You never know what delights await in the places you least expect. As for me, I'm already planning my next trip to explore more of Stamford's secrets.

P.S. Before heading back to NYC, I stopped by Canard Café Bar for a quick pick-me-up. Nestled in the stylish Urby Apartments, this café is a haven for coffee lovers and remote workers alike. I ordered an oat milk latte and a ham and croissant - both were amazing. The café's unique layout, with its cozy nooks and crannies, makes you feel like you're the only one there, even when it's bustling. It's the perfect spot to reflect on your Stamford adventure or plan your next one.
