Exploring Charleston, SC: A Blend of History, Adventure, and Southern Charm

Martin Goetzinger

Hey there, fellow adventurers! Today I’m diving into one of my favorite cities in the U.S.: Charleston, South Carolina.

This charming port city is a treasure trove of history, culture, and outdoor activities that make it a perfect getaway for those of us who crave both excitement and sophistication.  (If you are more into the 'excitement' side of the equation - check out my post on diving for Megalodon Teeth!)

A Stroll Through History

Charleston is steeped in history, and you can feel it as soon as you step onto its cobblestone streets. We kicked off our adventure by wandering through the historic downtown area. The architecture is a feast for the eyes, with pastel-colored homes lining the streets and beautiful antebellum mansions waiting to be explored.

One must-see is Rainbow Row, a series of 13 historic houses that are simply Instagram-worthy. After snapping some photos, we made our way to the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, where history comes alive. Built in 1771, this building has served various roles throughout American history—definitely worth the $12 admission!

Surfing at Folly Beach

No trip to Charleston would be complete without hitting the waves at Folly Beach. Known as the "Edge of America," this laid-back beach town offers fantastic surfing opportunities. We rented boards and caught some waves at The Washout, a popular spot for both beginners and seasoned surfers. The thrill of riding those waves while soaking in the stunning ocean views is an experience I’ll never forget.

Charleston Food is Legendary

After a day filled with adventure, we were ready to indulge in Charleston's renowned culinary scene. We dined at Husk, where the menu changes daily based on local ingredients. The atmosphere is vibrant yet relaxed, making it perfect for unwinding after a day outdoors. If you’re a seafood lover like me, don’t miss their fresh catch dishes.

For a more casual vibe, we also enjoyed Leon’s Oyster Shop — their chargrilled oysters are legendary!

Ghost Tours: Embrace the Haunting History

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we decided to delve into Charleston's spooky side with a ghost tour. Many believe Charleston to be one of the most haunted cities in America, so we opted for the Ghosts of Charleston Nighttime Walking Tour. This 90-minute adventure took us through some of the city’s most haunted locations, including graveyards and historic buildings.

Our guide was a fantastic storyteller who brought Charleston’s haunted history to life as we wandered through shadowy streets. The highlight was visiting the Unitarian Church Graveyard—an eerie yet fascinating experience that added an extra thrill to our trip.

Explore Nature

We spent a morning at the Angel Oak Tree on Johns Island, an awe-inspiring live oak estimated to be between 400 and 500 years old. Standing beneath its sprawling branches felt almost magical—a great spot for a picnic or just some quiet reflection.

For those looking to reconnect with nature while learning about Charleston's past, Charles Towne Landing is a must-visit. This historic site features trails, gardens, and even a replica of the ship that brought the first settlers to South Carolina in 1670.

Sunset Sailing

This one was a bit easier as I have lots of friends in Charleston who all seem to have sail boats!  However, if you don't have a friend network in town, you can wrap up our trip on a high note by booking a sunset sail with Schooner Pride (NOTE: I have not personally sailed with them, however I have heard good things....and the reality is - you just need to get out on the water!). As we cruised through Charleston Harbor with Fort Sumter in the distance, dolphins danced alongside our boat while the sun dipped below the horizon. It was one of those moments that makes you appreciate life’s simple pleasures.

Where to Stay

There are plenty of great spots to stay in Charleston at all price points.  For accommodations, we treated ourselves to a stay at The Spectator Hotel. With its luxurious décor and impeccable service, it felt like stepping back into the 1920s while still enjoying modern comforts. Plus, its location in the heart of downtown made it easy to explore all that Charleston has to offer.

Charleston Is A Destination Worth Discovering

Charleston may surprise you with its blend of history, adventure, and culinary delights. Whether you're surfing at Folly Beach or savoring exquisite Southern cuisine followed by an eerie ghost tour, this city has something for everyone.

So pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable experience in Charleston! Trust me; you won’t regret it.

Stay adventurous!

P.S. For my fellow coffee enthusiasts, don’t miss Kudu Coffee & Craft Beer —their cold brew coffee is the perfect pick-me-up after all that action!
